To try and imagine a time without crossovers on the road is almost impossible. As they take over the auto industry one compact, AWD version at a time, manufacturers like Mazda look on as the original adopters of the crossover trend, with years more experience designing and engineering the perfect industry-leading model.

One such model is the CX-5. Around since 2013 and was the first Mazda to feature the company’s now well-known KODO design. Sharing a platform with the Mazda3 and Mazda6, the Mazda CX-5 is the perfect example of what a crossover is truly meant to be: A small SUV that drives and feels like a car.

This time around Mazda’s added a few extra goodies to the 2019 Mazda CX-5, including an all-new engine, optional on the GT model and standard on the Signature: a 227-horsepower (that jumps to 250 if you’re willing to pony up for 91 octane), 310-lb-ft torque Skyactiv-G 2.5T Dynamic Pressure Turbo. They’ve improved their onboard Mazda Connect system to include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, as well as available SiriusXM Traffic Plus and Travel Link.

Otherwise, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 remains the well-designed, fun-to-drive crossover we’ve all come to know and live. Driving dynamics are just as good, and the standard Skyactiv-G 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that produces 187 horsepower and 186 kb-ft of torque is still available for GX, GS and GT models. Mazda’s i-Activ AWD is standard across the board, as well.

When it comes to design, Mazda’s got that covered in spades. Especially when it comes to the CX-5 with its KODO design and modernized features. Definitely a looker, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature model adds even more style and flare to the overall look and feel with Nappa leather and Abachi wood trim.

With room for five inside, decent trunk space and added ride height, the 2019 Mazda CX-9 is the ultimate small-family weekend trip companion. Regardless of model selected, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 answers your everyday crossover needs and is also a blast to drive in any and all-weather conditions.
